Back in March I posted this article on how to Boost Your Alexa Stats, which gave a brief explanation of Alexa, and linked to Dosh-Dosh’s excellent article on how to increase your Alexa ranking. I promised to update you on how it’s worked so far, and now I will.
Around the time of that post my rank was in the high 500,000’s. As you can see by my widget in the bottom right corner, it has now dropped to 121,000. Now obviously, my traffic levels have also improved in that time, but I think this reduction is also due to me following only 2 of the 20 points Maki outlined-If I ‘d done the other 18 as well, who knows?
- Install an Alexa widget on your blog. Why? Because this helps log visitors to your blog for Alexa purposes. Without it, your Alexa rank is more inaccurate, and probably much higher.
- Install either the Alexa searchbar if you really must use Internet Explorer (don’t!), or if you’ve come over from the Dark Side and use Firefox install the Search Status extension. Why? Because these tools log your visits to every blog you visit including your own.
You are not ‘cheating’ using these tools, simply enabling Alexa to get a more accurate picture of your traffic. You can’t ‘game’ them either, as it only logs one visit per site, per day.
If you’re not monetizing your blog, you really don’t need to worry about this, as the Alexa rank is really only used by advertisers to determine rates. However, by doing ‘2′ you can really help your fellow bloggers, by increasing their rank.
I know this for a fact, because I have recently helped a blogger to set up a new WordPress blog on it’s own domain. There is a widget on the blog, and I use the search status extension. In the first week of the blogs existence, the two of us have been the only visitors for obvious reasons, and the Alexa rank is already in the 600,000s.
It’s worth doing.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThanks for the tip. I’m also starting out, and thought of putting up the Alexa widget. Can you click once per day my site ? Naaah… just kidding
Hey, nice comment plugin you have here, where you got the country, OS, browser being used! what plugin is it? Can you share about it? Thanks!
Evangelizing and writing about Alexa is the best way to lower your rank. Usually, this gets readers interested in it and they might end up setting up the toolbar or extension.
I actually think the widget plays a fairly minor role.. consistent reference to your cornerstone post on Alexa will help you to lower your rank drastically.
You are right Chris , i installed the Alexa searchbar and my alexa rank improved by 150 K in just 12 days .

Whatever do you mean?
I figure on the widget being a case of ‘it doesn’t hurt’ and it’s immediate presentation to potential advertisers-why am I telling you this, I think you told me…..
Neil: Many thanks for visiting and commenting. The plugin is Firestats which does way more than just the flags, but they are pretty cool
I’ve given you a click today, I always visit my commenters. You’ve got a nice looking blog, and if you don’t already I think you’ll benefit from visiting Maki’s blog, Dosh Dosh.
If I were you, I’d dump the 3rd Google ads block in the post, and replace it with an affiliate link to the actual product you’re reviewing-until you get some traffic, Adsense won’t pay much anyway.
Have you looked into Auctionads? They could do well on your site.
Hey Madhur, were you always in Germany?
The toolbar/extension definitely ha a positive effect.
Hey Chris.. you always get me to do something positive to my blog! Alexa is coming to ShanKri-la.
I’ve the rankings @ 127k. still it does not reflect in the TLA sales.
Thanks for the reminder, Chris. I do wonder if seeing a website with an Alexa badge saying 600,000 is a turnoff? Seems to me like promoting the feedburner feed count if your site has 4 subscribers. What do you think?
Do you mean your rankings have not updated Vinod? They can be manually forced to update. If you mean you haven’t sold any, I guess that’s just down to the advertisers….
Josh, I’ve never found either to be a turn off but I accept your point. If it’s any consolation the Alexa widget is not visible if you’re running ad-block
Agreed. The Search Status plugin is excellent.
Oh, and if you’re anything like me, and you forget which plugin you’re thinking of when you install Linux, and you know you desperately need to install all the Firefox plugins you were running on Windows, or if you need to reinstall Windows, and you were already running *lots* of Firefox plugins on Windows, and then RT Cunningham has to tell you that you really mean the plugin “Search Status” when you thought you meant the plugin “About This Site”, and you can’t even catch your breath, then…
…you need to install InfoLister:
http://mozilla.doslash.org/infolister/
It’ll copy a list of your plugins out to a text file each time you run Firefox, and it can even FTP a copy of the file up to your website. Wicked.
Big THANKS for all the tips! I’ve subscribed to your feed
Nice tip Baxter, thanks (you got snagged by Akismet)
Thanks Neil, why not click my question mark on the top right and have a read of the old stuff
Thanks, Chris - I guessed something like that had happened.
I’ve been reading quite a bit about this lately, but I’m not sure if I’m worried enough to have my Alexa rank visible on my blog.

I’ll do what you suggested, but I’m still in the dark when it comes to Alexa.
Only bother with this if you’re monetizing your site. Otherwise don’t worry.

Very interesting article, thanx! I think I am ready to subscribe now ^^
On a side note, you could always purchase some cheap unrelated traffic for like 10$ (you thousands of visits, mostly from bots) but it does boost Alexa rating.
That’s a good point: Something like one of the hit exchanges like Blog Soldiers could also do that job for you for free, albeit with a bit of effort.
Be careful if you use adsense though, that your chosen method doesn’t contravene their TOS.
