Have you used StumbleUpon yet? If you haven’t, you really need to.
Stumble in a nutshell: You install a toolbar (Firefox or IE), and create a free account. Configure your options which basically consist of a page of interests, such as humour, science, blogs, films etc, where you put a check next to those you like. Click ’stumble’ on your toolbar and get taken to a random website based on your interests. Then click thumbs up or down depending on whether you like it or not, and stumble to the next site. SU learns your preferences as you go, and refines it’s suggestions for you, and I’ve found it to be spookily accurate. As well as clicking thumbs up or down, you also have the option to write up a review of the site on it’s Stumble page. Should you be browsing a web page and think it’s worthy of sharing with others, then you can click thumbs up on it, and be the first suggester to review it. The page will then go into SU and be spread amongst other stumblers with similar interests.
So the obvious thing that occurs to bloggers is ‘I can stumble my own pages and get more traffic!’, and it’s true, you can. However, nobody likes spam, whatever the flavour, so I would suggest the following, as my opinion:
- Should you stumble your own posts? I would say yes, but in moderation. I have in the past, but I have decided from now on, to do it only if I think that I have written something genuinely deserving of a wider audience, that is at least a month old. In other words, it’s good (IMHO), but has been missed and is now buried in my archives.
- Only stumble your very best. Stumbling your ‘What I had for breakfast’ post isn’t any fun for anyone.
- Be honest in your review, and don’t write in the 3rd person: ‘This blogger is wonderfully talented, and handsome too! Check them out!’ People will find out it’s you, and act accordingly.
To be honest though, stumbling your own writing is only of limited use. A far better use of Stumble, is to find good stuff for fellow stumblers and build your network that way. You can complete a profile for your SU ID, including photo (or screenshot) your blog name & address, and some info about yourself. Take some time to fill this out properly. Now start stumbling, write reviews of pages, and make some good suggestions of new sites (not your own). Here’s what you can do:
- Every time you land on a site from SU, the stumbler who suggested it is displayed in your toolbar. If you click on them, you get taken to their SU profile page. If you like their stumbles, add them as a friend-a single click!
- They can then see you’ve done this, and return the favour if they want to, by making you a friend. If you add someone, you start receiving more of their suggestions, and they likewise.
- If you really like a site, write a short, but useful review of it on the SU page. This will encourage more people to see who you are.
- Find interesting new sites & stumble them. Just click ‘I like It’ on a page, and if you’re first, SU will tell you & invite you to write a review. It’s great if you can stumble one of your friends blogs if they’ve come up with something good, and get them some new visitors. I stumbled a blog post, purely because I thought it was funny, and it resulted in over 8000 hits! A figure that high is an exception, but if the post is funny/informative/interesting it will get a massive SU boost.
Keep stumbling good stuff, write review & don’t spam, your network will grow and you will benefit. The best thing about SU though, is the sheer amount of great new sites that you’d never normally find. It results in a never ending stream of interesting stuff to blog about as well.
Be warned though, once you start, it’s hard to stop, and the mantra of ‘Just one more stumble’ will take you past 1am more than once….

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackAs a newbie, I find your site very helpful and came here to pat you on the back and suggest you find a way for a Q&A section.
One comment, however, I found submitting comments a little confusing. First, found place to enter my Name, Mail and Website, but no place to write comment. Had to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find that. Second, wasn’t sure if you want the name of my website, or the URL. Left name of site wich is The Urban Iconoclast. If you need URL it is urbaniconoclast.blogspot.com.
Next, how about a link exchange? As a newbie, I could use it.
Hi Edward, nice to meet you.
Thanks for your comments, regards Q&A did you mean something like my FAQ or Contribute pages up in the top left, or somewhere to ask me questions? If the latter, ask away in the comments or drop me an email. I’m no expert, but I’ll do my best.
The comments thing is down to the technology you’re using – partly your 800X600 resolution – going to 1024X768 would probably fix it & do your eyes a favour. The main problem is you using IE6 at that resolution – it’s such a bad browser, it cannot render a fluid template at that res.
I would really recommend switching to the Firefox browser, as that is standards compliant, but even IE 7 (which isn’t) would do it. I’m not saying you should switch just for me BTW, but using FF on the rest of the web would really improve your experience – give it a try, you can still keep IE as well.
The URL is always the full ‘http://MYBLOG.com’ format. I’ve fixed yours now. It’s all standard to a WordPress blog, and way better than Blogger when you get used to it
Last, what about a link exchange?
Oh, I see. Sure, I don’t do link exchange for this blog as it is really just about bloggers resources, but I’ve got 3 things for you:
1. Go visit ‘The Bestest Blog Of All Time’ as in my Featured Bloggers blogroll on the right. Bobby’s free link exchange will bring you some good traffic.
2. You’ve already seen my Thermal blog, I always link my regular visitors over there.
3. Submit an article to Blog-Op. Anything you like as a tip to help other bloggers, 1 paragraph or 1 page, it will earn you at least 2 links.
Thanks for the Z List link, and thanks for visiting Blog-Op.
this is great! I just joined a few days ago! Good post.

A nice writeup of StumbleUpon. For those that haven’t yet signed up, it’s well worth doing so.
Thanks Baxter!

If you stumble your own sites, be prepared to get 0 or few visits if you are brand new. If you know that others submit your great posts to StumbleUpon, you’ll be far better off letting them find it.
To improve your odds of your own submissions getting a ton of hits, you need to increase your “fans” and your “audience”. If these #s are high (e.g. fans around 100 or more, audience above 5,000), more people will see your site very quickly.
SU can be a great resource for new visitors, but many stumblers never return to a site after they stumbled upon it. Some of my posts have received 20,000+ visitors from SU, but I’m pretty sure that very few of these returned.

I’ve been doing this in anonymous comments on my own blog… and it hasn’t worked so far….
Maybe I’ll reconsider the strategy and try this instead….

I have StumbleUpon on my tool bar menu and use it all the time. Thanks very much for the offer to link up, etc. I am working on it even as we speak, er, blog, er…type.
Whoa – some spam there. Akismet not running?
Hi Baxter, it is running, but there’s a new strain around where the ‘commenter’ has numbers in their name which seems to be getting through.
I’ll keep reporting it and Akismet will soon learn what to look for.
I’d like to leave the Bad Behavior plugin running, but at the moment it bans anyone from India, so it isn’t much use….
Bad Behavior bans anyone from India from commenting?
Anyhow, sorry, this is getting off topic.
Carry on Baxter….
No, but it picks on a couple of visitors from India (although not all) Obviously their IP is a little too close to some spambots. I’ll have to switch BB on when I go on holiday though, otherwise it will be ridiculous….
