What’s Alexa? It’s an internet statistics monitoring company, owned by Amazon.com. They provide a toolbar (which was once commonly considered spyware, less so now) which when installed, reports traffic data back to Alexa.
Which means? Alexa issue all websites a traffic rating based on this information - you can see mine at the bottom of the right sidebar. The lower the number, the better.
Why should I care? You should only really pay attention if you sell ads or write paid posts etc. Most advertisers use your Alexa stats in determining what to pay you. The better the rating, the more cash you get.
But the Alexa stats are only based on a tiny sample of web users and are hopelessly unrealistic. I know that, you know that, but I’ll leave it to you to argue with the advertisers. They’re as realistic as TV ratings, and look how many great shows have got cancelled….
OK, I’m convinced, show me how. Sure, I’ll just cut and paste this whole post from Dosh-Dosh and…. Oh, I’ll be good, go read it here: 20 Quick Ways To Increase Your Alexa Ranking. It really is worth reading, as is the rest of the blog for that matter.
I’ll be trying out a few of these: I already have the Alexa widget thanks to Matt at eJabs, but I don’t have any reviews yet, so I would be grateful
Glowing would be nice, I’ll settle for fair. I shall also review any blogs I see with Alexa widgets on, so if you add one to your blog, let me know.
I’ll let you know how my stats get on….

Since I’ve had the Alexa plugin installed (just over 2 weeks now), my Alexa rating has gotten better by over 200,000 points.
When installed it was 720,170…and now it is 489,064! That’s actually a difference of 231,106! My traffic hasn’t really changed much in the last 2 weeks, so I guess I can attribute the change to the plugin.
I installed Alexa widget on my blog in January and today my pagerank has improved from 780K to 330K si definately feel it also affects the alexa ratings .
Since we’ve all got the Alexa toolbar or Search Status installed.. we should visit each others blogs more often.. that’ll help boost the Alexa Rank as well..
Cheers guys.
I do my best Maki
Mine has dropped from 400K to 320K in that time, but I have had a couple of stumbles, but your figures do seem to bear out the truth of it.
BTW, I’ve also reviewed all 3 of you
I installed mine about two weeks ago and it hasn’t done anything but just sit there. It doesn’t blink, it doesn’t budge it doesn’t even make obscene comments. Maybe I’m too new to count.
Chris, interesting topic! I am not so much concerned with Alexa ratings for myself but I am for another blog that I help maintain. What and where are the ‘reviews’ that you refer to?
If you click on my Alexa badge (it may be hidden by your ad-blocker) it will take you to their site, where you can write a review of the site concerned.
If you’ve ever rated a book etc. on Amazon, you’ll recognise the template.
Chris.. I wrote that reviewing might help but I’m not sure if it really does.. just heard it from some webmasters that it might help.
Anyway I tried reviewing Blog-Op but got an error message.. “This site is currently unavailable for reviewing. Please check back soon.”
Bummer.. I was looking forward to praising your blog lol.
Maki’s statement shows exactly why Alexa is such a ridiculous #. There’s some sites that have top 1,000 Alexa ranks, but only get a couple hundred/thousand visitors per day (because most of them are SEO-minded). There’s others that get 100,000+ per day and aren’t in the top 25,000 (e.g. some games or Myspace layout sites).
That said, have you found that having the widget improves your Alexa rankings? I might as well add it if so …
Anita
Thanks for trying Maki
I figure reviews ain’t going to hurt, and as they’re based in the Amazon system, you may get some exposure for doing them.
I’ve had a similar response when I’ve tried reviewing sites, Alexa is just a crap site, and makes Technorati look like a paragon of robustness.
Anita, everyone appears to have seen some benefit - I go with the opinion of ‘can it hurt?’ It may, as Maki suggested, assist Alexa in tracking your site’s stats.
Mine has gone down a lot since installing widget thingie.
