Time for some I feel…
For those of you who didn’t know, I have been a ‘stay at home dad’ for the last 2 years, which means that although I’ve had plenty else to occupy me, there’s always been a lot of time available for running my three blogs, writing, reading and promoting etc.
Well from next month I’m heading back to work full time, and as a result I just don’t think I can dedicate the sort of time that this blog needs to it anymore. While engaged in getting my new job over the last month, my posting frequency here has gone out of the window, and from posting 6+ times a week to once every 10 days isn’t really what I wanted for this site.
So, what to do?
I don’t want to just walk away and abandon ship, so to speak, given the time that I’ve put into this blog, so I’d welcome the input of the people who make the effort to come and read my ramblings. Should I:
- Sell up? I’m not averse to the idea, although I wouldn’t know what it’s worth, and as dear Google appear to have given my PR a 2 point penalty this morning (from 5 to 3) it’s probably worth less than last week. I’ve no desire to give the blog away, but I’d entertain a sensible offer.
- Keep it, but only post occasionally. Would you stay subscribed to a blog that only updates now & then?
- Attempt to recruit some extra writers? I’m not in a position to employ anyone, but if you wanted to write here on a regular basis, I’d be happy to have you monetize your own work etc.
Any others?
I’m not walking away from blogging, as I’d keep my main personal and photo blogs, and I’d definitely remain a reader of everyone I read now, but I don’t think I can maintain Blog-Op, and I’d hate to see it wither away through neglect.
Any opinions gratefully received

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI have come to love your insights into various things about blogging and I have learnt quite a bit from reading your blog.
I would hate to see Blog-op to be sold but knowing that I can still follow you through your other 2 blogs, it would be great to see what kind of offer you get.
if you write 3 posts a month, I would still be subscribed because I know those 3 would me worth reading than 30 other posts in my reader.
Congrats on your new job, Chris!
Chris, Congrats on the job!
I’m with K on on this. Blog-Op has become one of my favourite blogs (and I’m working my way back through your old posts). I’d really love to see you keep it going somehow, even if there were only 3 posts a month. I’ll stay subscribed.
I’d hate to see it sold, but if you go that route, I hope you find it a good home. (I’m not talking about sploggers, I’m just saying I don’t think anyone else could do quite the same job as you have).
Good luck!
You silver toungued devil K
Cheers mate, that’s nice to know. I’m not desperate to sell or move on, but if 3 or 4 posts a month meant subscribers & traffic heading towards 0 it would be a bit depressing.
Still, I would just transfer my sage thoughts to Thermal
(Which can now be sponsored post free!)
Posted at the same time Stephen!
Thanks, that’s really kind of you.
Congrats on the job! I would stay subscribed even if you hardly posted. Probably your best bet would be to make it into a team blog, pick good bloggers for it, and let them take the ad money from their posts while you get the ad money from text links or the other (home)pages. You blog when you can, otherwise, welcome to the world of passive income.
Slow and steady (1 post a week) can be better than dozens a week.
Just make it work for you, and we will keep reading.
If you write it, they will come. Sorry, I just had to use that line.
Once a week is fine. I’d still read. Selling it is non-issue unless you really need the money.
If you have the time, I’d recommend setting up passive income (like Google or Yahoo ads) on the older posts (one month or older) using something like the Shylock plugin. You’ll capture the clicks from the casual surfers while sparing your regular readers. The key is to make the blog pay for itself, if nothing else.
Yeah, I reckon you could cope with 2 posts a month. Hell, JohnTP did it for a while and he coped.
Just blog when you want to, we don’t care (in the nicest possible way!)
Chris
You’re one of the first bloggers I’ve met in this niche and I would hate to see you sell the blog.
I’ll still subscribe and hang around even if you don’t post often…. write whenever you can and when you feel like it.
As RT suggested, try monetizing your single post pages to pay for hosting costs. Or do as Michael says and turn it into a group blog.
Let the blog age a little..who knows you might get sick of work and decide to go all out online again.
Hi Chris,
I’ve enjoyed reading your posts here, and do hope you don’t pack it in. It certainly seems I’m not the only one, which is no surprise, but best of luck with your return to full-time employment.
Attempt to recruit some extra writers…thats the right choice for you i think
Chris,
I’m with all of these other guys. I would rather read infrequent quality posts than see you sell up or chuck it in. You were one of the first bloggers I met and you were very supportive of me when I started.
Good luck with with whatever you decide to do.
Congrats on the new job!
I will stay subscribed, no matter what your posting frequency will be. I have come to rely on Blog-Op as a great resource for all things blogging-related. If that info moves to Thermal I have a subscription there too.
No matter what you decide, I will stick with ya!
Doesn’t matter how many times you post in a month buddy, I’ll still be a regular visitor.
Thanks everyone, that’s really cool
I can see that while my audience is small, my readers are perfectly formed
I shall carry on then, sharing my pearls of wisdom, on a semi-regular basis. I start on the 26th, and I’m pretty busy at the moment getting ready, but I shall be around…..
