Do you know who your neighbours are?
Of course you do, but what about your blog neighbours, i.e. the other websites operating on your shared server? (Unless you’re on a dedicated server, in which case you’re too rich and we don’t want to talk to you 
).
The reason this is important is that you will share your I.P. address with the other websites residing on your server, and if you’re blog is surrounded by large numbers of splogs (spam-blogs) blackhat-SEO types, hate sites etc. you could find yourself getting tarred with the same brush. Most banning tools work by banning I.P.s as a starting point, and you could find your blog dropping out of search results, comments getting blacklisted and emails from your domain treated as spam.
My blogs are on a shared server with around 200 other sites, and although I wouldn’t choose to visit some of them, none look overly offensive. What are your choices if you don’t like your neighbours? Well, you could complain to your hosts, but if they’re going to be allowing large numbers of these sites to take root, you’re probably better off finding a new host anyway.
How to check out your neighbours? Simply pay a visit to myipneighbors.com, type in your address and find out who you’re sharing space with. The results could be enlightening!
