One of the many ‘absolutes’ that you have constantly thrown at you as a novice blogger, is that you must stick rigidly to a ‘niche’. Don’t go out of this niche, don’t talk about anything else, lest you drive all your readers away, and if you really must talk about other subjects, start another blog.
Like all of the other ‘absolutes’ this one’s largely rubbish too - one of the beauties of blogging is that it’s you writing about things that interest you, and speaking personally, I engage much more with the bloggers style & personality than the focus of their content (although obviously there has to be some interest there). My Thermal blog is, and always will be totally random, and some of my other favourite reads are also as random as a sack of badgers (that also contains other animals): Untwisted Vortex, eJabs, J-Walk blog - no one subject to focus on, but usually interesting, and the stats aren’t bad at all.
However, if you’re going to setup a blog purely for money making, then without a doubt, niche blogs pay the best. Maki* at the Dosh Dosh blog is embarking on a project to launch 7 new blogs in 7 days, with the aim of establishing them in their niche and monetizing them. He will document his efforts, and record the progress of each one, and share what he learns. Obviously for now he cannot share the URLs of the blogs, as Dosh-Doshs large readership would skew the experiment should he link to them, but I hope in time we get to see them, as I’d be interested to see what they look like.
I never set out to make money blogging, and my current feeble attempts are really just a result off finding out that you can. But the idea of setting up some blogs just to make money (obviously) appeals to me, and given the available space & bandwidth my hosting package offers me, it is very tempting to give it a try. The biggest stumbling block though would be furnishing them with content: both finding it and having the time to put it up. Maki has recently stated that he thinks he’ll be able to post once a day, or alternate days, to each of these blogs spending no more than 1 hour a day upon it. I hope he shares the secret of this eventually, because I spend way too much time on my own posts, another 7 blogs would turn this into a 24 hour a day operation for me!
What’s your view on niche blogging?
Do you think it’s necessary for your main (or perhaps only) blog? Is it only relevant to making money? I guess Blog-Op is a niche blog, being focussed on blogging, and sure, I’m not likely to post up any pictures of my holiday or my kids Guinea Pigs. But equally, I don’t break into a cold sweat any time I publish something slightly different, nor do I research every possible keyword within a post before putting it up. Maybe I should? Would kind of take the fun out of it though…
As ever, I’d love to hear your thoughts, and if you’ve got any tips to share, or if you’ve blogged about this subject already, comment and link away.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI have been thinking about starting a ‘Thermal’ like blog for all my random stuff. Right now, I have set aside Fridays for such posts and sharing the tech stuff I find interesting.
As you rightly mentioned, if you are in this to make big bucks, niche blogging gives you the best bang for the buck.
The more you loosen up the better your posts would me, imho.
Thanks for the link & the positive feedback Chris.
I pretty much agree with your point that niche blogging will bring in the best revenue, because you have a more dedicated readership that is super passionate about the one thing you’re focusing on. Therefore, a more enticing money making opportunity.
As a reader, I like the random blogs better though…way better. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy reading a blog on one subject that I’m passionate about, because I enjoy that too. Personally though, as you said, I like to interact with the blogger & his/her personality more so than I like to read about any one topic at great depth.
With that being said, I’m going to have have to say that Maki of DoshDosh chose Maki because of one of the following reasons:
1. Maki Genryusai is a video game character from both the Final Fight and Street Fighter series.
- OR -
2. Maki Kagura is a video game character from the King of Fighters series.
I base my “educated guess” on all the animated “video game like” graphics all over the DoshDosh site.
That brings me to my next question…why DoshDosh?
Well i think i was born Random, so i think that is my style. I have a sack of badgers myself
I think blogs dedicated to one thing, how to make money for example have their place. But they are not the most exciting reads unless they have a particular talent for writing.
I agree Claire, but one question.
What do you do with your sack-o-badgers?
Yeah I linked to some Maki possibilities Matthew, definitely the Japanese influence. However that Wiki link suggested that Maki is a female character: something he’s not telling us?
Maki…we demand you reveal your true identity!
Lately I have been straying because I cannot get my mind off that girl band from Russia called Serebro — pretty hot. But they are a complete departure (more like a distraction) from what I normally do and I sneak a couple of posts in or mention them in passing in others.
I don’t know if that is good or bad, or maybe I really don’t care. I think you have to just let a little bit of personality eek out from time to time.
I frankly wish the make money on the web sites would all shrivel up and die.
It saddens me to see sites that have absolutely nothing to do with content and quality content make money or rave about money and the concept of a GOOD site that people might like or find useful has gone out the window.
Niches are great if it is something of value…and not necessarily monetary…having something that appeals to people and draws a TYPE a DEMOGRAPHIC that you can sell to advertisers SHOULD be enough
It depends on how mad my badgers are, ask Chris he is one of them!
Well said Crunchy.
I don’t see a definite answer … I see some niche blog sneak in one or two personal posts here and there.
Crunchy…
It’s not fair to lump all monetized sites together in your rant. Sure, there are some that monetization has killed, but there are others that are stronger than ever, only they’re helping to reward the blogger for his/her work on the content.
I’m sure you read a few monetized blogs daily.
For sure, there are some good monetization sites available (Dosh Dosh is the best example), but there’s an awful lot of Chow clones who are effectively just copying everything he does.
I don’t even like his site.
There I said it…I don’t like John Chow’s website!!
Funny. I actually chose Maki because I’m a fervent supporter of the Communist party in Israel…… Not. ^-^
I’m definitely not female.. there are pictures of me up on some blogs I’ve written for but not on Dosh Dosh so you’ll have to do some digging to find them… -p
This sexual ambiguity thingy actually reminds me of a fiasco that’s currently going on about another “make money online blogger”…
And ‘Dosh’ is British slang for money.. correct me if I’m wrong, Chris.
As for Dosh Dosh, I do try very hard to keep on topic, which can be boring for me sometimes. But I do write in other blogs as well so it keeps things balanced and interesting for me.
As for ways to come up with content.. that’s fodder for an upcoming post..
Dosh is indeed a UK term, which made me wonder if you were an ex-pat when I first found your blogspot blog all those months ago….
I agree that multiple blogs are the best way to keep yourself on message with each one, and I look forward to your content post
You’re just a tease Maki, how are we going to find you without knowing your name? Or does Maki exist elsewhere……?
