As you may know from your own experience of reading blogs, the more you read, the harder it is to remember to visit them. Your list of bookmarks gets longer, and you get less inclined to click on every link, especially if you have to wait for it to load.

Turn this scenario around to being a blog writer, and you can see it’s another obstacle to gaining readers; you need to make it as easy as possible for people to read your blog. One answer, and an essential in any case, is to offer an RSS/atom feed from your blog, something I discussed in more detail in this post: RSS Feeds-Essential For Your Blog.

The best way to provide an RSS feed in my opinion is to use FeedBurner, and as an extra incentive, they offer many other ways to publicise your blog, one of which is email subscription. Because, no matter how good your blog & feed is, if your reader doesn’t understand RSS or newsreaders, they’re not going to subscribe to you. FeedBurner email subscription gives you the code to insert a subscription box like that you can see on my right sidebar. All your reader has to do is enter their email address, click subscribe, and then click on the activation link they will receive in an email. Once setup, FeedBurner will email the subscribers only when you publish new content, and never more than once a day.

You can setup the format and content of the email sent, and track how many subscribers you have, along with other details about them. An excellent service, all for free. So, setup email subscription on your blog, and make it easier for people to read your blog-that way they’re more likely to return.
