I know a few of my regular blogs have these, so I’ll cast my vote straightaway: I’m unlikely to drop any cash in myself as I’m more likely to contribute by clicking ads etc, but I have no objection to them at all – I’m happy for bloggers to make some money any way they can that’s legal.
But, I run these polls to provide info to you as much as to me, so I’m interested to know others anonymous opinions, though after you’ve voted, please feel free to leave a comment. These buttons are usually provided by Paypal and are marked as Tip jars, donation buttons etc. and ask for you to donate a sum of money, if you’re found the blog interesting or useful.
I personally wouldn’t use them, as I’d feel cheeky asking you to give me money for something I’ve freely put up on the web. I hope you don’t mind me doing paid posts, and I’ll be happy if you ignore my ads at worst, but if you want to help me out, a link back or signing up through one of my affiliate links would be much appreciated. A tip jar I saw on a blog recently stipulated a minimum $5 donation, and I think that’s pushing a bit too far.
So, the choices are fairly clear cut, and hopefully the results will give current or prospective users of ‘tip jars’ some indication of their reader perception. If you do use one, has anyone given you some money? Would you mind telling us how much, anonymously if you want?
If you cannot see the poll, please temporarily disable your ad-blocker. Thanks.

I just put it there as an experiment

I voted for #2 as well. They don’t bother me much at all. Pop-ups are another story – they drive me nuts and many seem to slip by pop up blockers. But then again, if I really liked the blog/blogger, I’d still keep visiting
So there you go – my easy going Canadian girl answer
Thanks Guys.
I’ve seen some quite vitriolic comments against tip jars from the odd troll, which I don’t think is fair. I’ve no doubt there’s things on my blogs that people don’t like, but as you say, you pick & choose…
Pop ups and pop-unders are really quite evil….
I voted #2, but I might tip depending on the cause. I found one blog where a young man was trying to get 1,000 people to donate $11.11 each to finance his trip around the world. That sounded like the kind of crazy thing I would have done when I was younger, so I decided to support him. The irony is, after about five minutes of looking for ways to contribute my money, I couldn’t find any.
Maybe it’s not quite the same, but give me a good story explaining why you need the money, and I’ll probably reward your creativity with a small contribution.
I don’t like em.
They didn’t bother me at first, but the more I thought about it, the more they cheesed me off.
If it is for a charity…ooooookay. Maybe.
If it is because you are giving out free software like plugins or themes..no problem.
…a free service can get a ‘tip.’ That is fair.
But the one’s from regular bloggers with regular personal blogs…it bothers me.
Why does that person need money more than me?
Why SHOULD I give money to a virtual stranger just because they ASK for it?
Are they homeless or hardup?
There has to be a VALID reason for asking for money online.
We all (those who chose that route) have hosting charges and internet bills to pay….that is the cost of blogging.
[...] (again) from Blog-Op put up a poll to see what people thing of bloggers using “tip [...]
I’ve left tips on blogs that really inspired me or where I used a service they provided (such as the author of a wordpress plugin I really like etc). I don’t mind them ion blogs at all though I probably will never put one up myself.
Cheers Crunchy, good points.
Thanks Polli, I agree, for something tangible like a plugin there’s no problem at all.
