Although you have long been able to use Google to search for back links to your site, the service has been flaky at best. It has now been much improved, and is available as part of Google Webmaster Tools.
If you haven't signed up there for a free account yet, you really should, as the information you can find out about your blog or website is very useful. You will also need an account to submit your sitemap which is a quick, essential step to improving your Google visibility.
Why should you be interested in your backlinks?
- To see who's linked to you: You may want to link them back, or say thanks.
- To see the context of how they're linking to you: They may be stealing your content, but have failed to alter some of the links in one of you posts.
- The more links you have, the better the chances of a higher page rank. Anyway, don't you just want to know?
Simply click on the 'links' tab once logged in to Google Webmaster Tools.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackApparently I have an even more basic question: How do I “upload” a file to my blogspot address? Presumably that’s something different from publishing a post, although that obviously involves uploading.
I just don’t understand what they want me to do….
I’m afraid you can’t upload anything to Blogger (what a wonderful system it is) – you need to insert the meta tag.
My post here will tell you how.
I did insert the Meta tag yesterday after I couldn’t figure out how to “upload” anything. I am relieved to read that I didn’t miss something obvious.
I have gone back and read the link you suggested. Does this mean that the sitemap I generated using another of your links is useless and I should just use the atom address you refer to in your article?
Thanks for your assist.
Hi Curmudgeon, yes you’re right, the atom address will provide your sitemap to Google. As Google and Blogger are now the same company, I guess it works for them.
