It’s a good question, and one I’ve just been asked by David Airey, who gave his ‘Five Reasons Why I blog‘.
It may be a useful question to ask yourself, to see if you’re on track, or to ensure you’re still blogging for the right reasons. If you want to answer this question on your own blog, feel free to drop a link to it in my comments - It’d be cool to read your reasons.
Here are mine:
- I really enjoyed building my own website last year, and wanted to do more, and have something I could work on every day. I’m a long way from an expert, but I enjoy dabbling with HTML, CSS etc. as you can probably tell from Blog-Op. This is why I decided to start a blog.
- When Googling ‘How to blog’ last November, two results which had a big influence on me, and convinced me I could blog were Steve Pavlina and Darren Rowse. Not for one minute do I think I can be as good as them, but their positivity, and brilliant tips and information gave me a real positive push to start.
- I still remember my very first comment (thanks Carol!) and what a thrill it was to think ‘Wow, someones reading my blog & making nice comments!’ Since then, the comments have become my favourite part, I’ve struck up some good online friendships, and had the chance to chat to some really cool people from all around the world.
- I had no intention of, and no idea that you could make money from blogging when I started, but I do now, and it’s an added incentive. I’m a firm believer in paid posts, and think that everyone should do them who wants to, subject to maintaining their blog’s quality and regular number of posts. We’re not poor by any means, but paid posting is the difference between us having a holiday this year or not, and that means a lot.
- I have simply, really enjoyed it and found something that I would like to continue to do. I intend to start some more blogs, on various subjects, whilst maintaining my current ones. I can’t remember what I used to do with my time before
Right, they’re mine - what are yours?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackAn interesting read Chris. I’m going to look into those paid posts you keep mentioning.
Thanks for answering
Wow, you were quick!
I think I blog because I love the sense of community. I have never felt it impersonal to speak via the ‘net… I was on parenting forums before and enjoyed that and find the blogging adds extra depth.
I too am enjoying the education about html and so on. Not to mention reading up on all the monetary opportunities.. I research this not out of greed but interest…the blogosphere and net is always changing and evolving.
I am also always still totally tickled when someone comments on what I post.
I think it harkens back to my insecurities in school…I remember in university being so blown away that people listened to what I had to say on a subject. It was and still is a great confidence booster.
I blog at BAYB to help everyone I guess. All my website ideas and whatnot have been to try to help others along. In doing that I am helping BAYB. I blog I guess, for goals as well too. I have such big ideas, dreams and plans I hope to accomplish through blogging.
Cool, thanks guys
Here is my 13 Reasons Why I Like Blogging
I will Exercise for Comments!

Blog to make people laugh … that’s the primary reason at least. Sometimes they laugh at how dumb I can be (like with today’s original video), but hey … laughter is laughter, right?
Many of my reasons are much the same as yours. I’ve always kept journals, and am a much faster typer than writer, so blogging just made sense.
Having said that, I censor much of what I write - I have to be careful because of my husband’s job etc.
I’m a comment junkie too - I love to hear what others have to say.
Comments are a cool part of blogging for sure.
I’m thinking of setting up an anonymous blog for similar reasons Kai. Not for anything sinister, but just so I can vent unrestrained when the need takes me!
