Well for me anyway.
One of the big flaws about WordPress admin, that seems to go unchecked from version to version, is that each admin element requires a separate pageload. For example, to moderate my Akismet spam list, before going to Better Comments Manager to reply to comments meant:
- Clicking on comments=1 pageload.
- Click on Akismet=2nd pageload.
- If there’s no spam comments (it does happen), I click on BCM=3rd pageload.
- If there is, I moderate the comments, recover the non-spam and move on to BCM.
But after installing Admin Drop Down Menus from YellowSwordfish.com, I can now just hover over the comments tabs, and if Akismet has a (0) next to it, it’s straight to BCM in a single pageload - it’s nicer to be just more efficient with your bandwidth for one thing, and on days when your ISP or Webhost is running through treacle, this will be a great frustration saver.
Here’s what it looks like in action:

Just visit the link, download, upload to your blog and activate - nothing else required. For those of you already in the know, make sure you have 2.2.1 the latest version.
Why isn’t this standard with WordPress?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI really dig better comments manager! I had sort of assumed that it would replace the existing comment management, but it doesn’t and I’m sure if I were a programmer the reason why would be obvious, like it would screw up future upgrades.
Have you had to upgrade since installing the admin drop downs? It looks like an awesome plugin.
This looks cool . I think Wordpress people should definately do something about the admin panel .
Yeah, I think next time you upgrade it would just re-insert the old comments system. Like drop downs, it should be ‘fitted as standard’. I agree with Matt Mullenweg to a point, about keeping the default install stripped down, and allowing people to customise, but these 2 plugins just increase the usability of WP.
Michael, I installed the plugin, then went from 2.2 to 2.2.3 with no ill effects.
That’s great to hear, Chris. Thanks!
Haha, I looked at that and thought “That’s my blog that is!”
Almost Rhys
I noticed it on your blog and thought it looked cool, and then a couple of days later it was featured on the dashboard as it had been upgraded & I thought ‘I’m having that!’.
[...] Chris talks about a cool wordpress plugin - Wordpress Drop Down Menu [...]
I have been using htis plugin for a while with mixed success. It gets interfered with sometimes, and then you have no options to choose from , meaning you can do nothing. It is however awesome if you don’t have that problem. I think the interfering plugin is the wordpress stats plug in.
Thanks John, I don’t use that plugin, so I’ve been ok so far. Have you mailed the plugin author? He seems to be on the ball when it comes to that kind of thing.
Chris, what would I do without you?
Great tip on the Admin Menu.. I have tried the one from Ozh and didn’t like it as much. But, this one is so easy on the eyes as well as so functional!!! It just rocks!
This one worth trying. We should use anykind of plugin that can increase our productivity. Thanks for the saring, Chris. I use tiger admin plugin. But not still a lot of Loadpage happening.
I liked Tiger Ken, but just found a couple of bugs with it that spoilt it. I find Spotmilk way better. I think it’s time WordPress themselves updated it though.
Thanks K
This plugin again, should be a core part of WP.
Chris, Thanks for the tip, I’m downloading the plugin right now. I am always frustrated with navigating through the Admin menu, especially when the connection is slow.
I have a quesion for you, and please respond to my e-mail, if you wish.
There si a drop down plugin for wordpress, that I can use in the main page?
Do you mean for the navigation visible to your readers? I can’t say I’ve heard of one, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was. I shall have a look……
