You know the old saying: “It’s all fun and games until your washing machine stops working.” A smooth-running, modern life is built on a foundation of smooth-running, modern appliances, and when one of those appliances stops working, it can really derail our day. Today we look at a few common problems with washing machines, as well as which ones might be easy fixes and which ones warrant a call to the almighty washer repair service.
- The Basics.
If you load up your clothes, pour in the soap, press the button, and nothing happens, postpone your panic attack and doublecheck some basics: Is the machine plugged into the wall? Is the power cord connected to the machine itself? If the machine turns on but no water comes in, check the hoses. Are they all connected? Are any of them kinked or twisted? Are all the right valves opened from your pipes to the washing machine hoses? - Into the Cabinet of Mystery.
If none of the obvious fixes work, you may have to delve in a little deeper. The washer cabinet is where you’ll find most of the electronic components for the washer. This time, make sure the unit is unplugged and consult you manual to find the cabinet. Don’t worry—even if you can’t tell a diode from a donut, there are a few common-sense things to look for. Are any switches clogged with dirt or gunk? Do any fuses look burned out? Are there any loose wires? If a component looks damaged to you, check to see if it’s easily removed, and bring it to the repair shop. If nothing appears obvious, it’s time to call the pros and set up a housecall. - A Little Housekeeping.
Some of the most common problems with washing machines don’t involve breakdown at all. A machine can start to smell musty or mildewy, even just after a load has been “cleaned”. Check your lint trap to be sure water is actually circulating. Scrub down the door to remove any soap deposits or hard-water stains. If the smell persists, it may be deeper in the plumbing. Try running the machine with EITHER a half cup of baking soda OR three cups of white vinegar (never both, unless you plan on hosting an impromptu science fair in your laundry room).
If none of these solutions fixes your problem, a visit from the professionals may be in order. Keep the name and number of a prompt, competent, and affordable appliance repair service near the machine itself, so that when you do have a problem, you can call right away.
